Bonuses and promotional offers are a staple of online sports betting in the United States. They attract new customers, reward loyal players, and keep competition fierce among sportsbooks. But where there are incentives, there’s also potential for abuse. Some bettors try to exploit these offers in ways that violate the terms and spirit of the promotion. To protect themselves and maintain fair play, bookmakers have developed sophisticated systems to detect and prevent bonus abuse. Here’s how they do it.

What Is Bonus Abuse?

Bonus abuse occurs when a player attempts to gain an unfair advantage by manipulating promotional offers. Common examples include:

  • Creating multiple accounts to claim a welcome bonus more than once.
  • Collaborating with others to cover all possible outcomes of a bet.
  • Using bonuses in ways that eliminate or minimize risk.
  • Falsifying identities or payment information to bypass restrictions.

While these tactics might seem clever, they are considered fraud. Sportsbooks can respond by closing accounts, confiscating winnings, and, in serious cases, reporting the activity to authorities.

Data Analysis and Pattern Recognition

Modern sportsbooks rely heavily on data analytics to monitor player behavior. Algorithms track betting patterns, deposit and withdrawal activity, and other indicators to flag suspicious accounts.

For instance, if a new user deposits a large amount, places only low-risk bets using bonus funds, and quickly withdraws winnings, that pattern may signal bonus hunting rather than genuine betting interest.

Systems also compare IP addresses, device identifiers, and payment details to detect whether multiple accounts belong to the same individual. If two accounts log in from the same device or use the same credit card, it raises a red flag.

Cross-Platform Collaboration

Many U.S. sportsbooks share information about known bonus abusers through industry partnerships and fraud prevention networks. This cooperation helps prevent repeat offenders from simply moving to another platform.

Additionally, “device fingerprinting” technology records unique technical details about a user’s device—such as screen resolution, browser type, and operating system. Even if a person creates new accounts with different emails, these digital fingerprints can reveal that the same device is being used.

Manual Review and Risk Assessment

Although much of the monitoring is automated, human oversight remains essential. Security and compliance teams manually review flagged accounts to determine whether the behavior truly indicates abuse or just unusual but legitimate activity.

They look at factors such as:

  • The speed at which bonuses are wagered.
  • Whether multiple accounts show similar betting patterns.
  • Overlaps in payment methods or IP addresses.
  • The player’s previous history with the sportsbook.

This combination of technology and human judgment helps distinguish between honest players and those attempting to game the system.

Prevention Through Clear Rules

Prevention is just as important as detection. Sportsbooks in the U.S. publish detailed bonus terms and conditions that specify how offers can be used. These may include minimum odds requirements, wagering thresholds, or restrictions on eligible games and bet types.

By clearly outlining the rules and enforcing them consistently, sportsbooks reduce both misunderstandings and deliberate misuse. Identity verification (KYC – “Know Your Customer”) is also a key safeguard, ensuring that each player has only one verified account.

A Matter of Trust

For bookmakers, the fight against bonus abuse isn’t only about protecting profits—it’s about maintaining trust. When promotions are exploited, it undermines the fairness of the system and affects the majority of players who use bonuses responsibly.

That’s why sportsbooks continue to invest in advanced technology, staff training, and industry cooperation to keep betting fair and transparent.

For players, the best advice is simple: read the terms, play responsibly, and use bonuses as intended. Doing so ensures a safer, more trustworthy betting environment for everyone.
